Southport burst on to the QAFL state league scene with a bang, winning their first match in the competition against Western Districts.
The newly named Sharks scored by 7.12 (54) to 5.12 (42) in a result that announced the arrival of what was to become a super club.
Southport subsequently lost their next three matches against Sandgate, Sherwood and Mayne, but after that they lost only three more on their way to that historic first-up grand final win over Morningside.
The Sharks created history in beating the Panthers by 13.12 (90) to 12.5 (77) in the same week that ruckman Peter Guy won the Grogan Medal.
