Football Records
At the end of 2010, the Sharks had played 549 games in State League. Their record is 435 wins, one draw and 116 losses, giving the club an overall winning percentage of 79.78. Those numbers back up the view that the Southport Sharks is one of Australia’s most successful clubs, if not the most successful, in any football code.

Statistical oddities
- The number 61 has a fascinating association with the Southport Sharks.
They have lost three grand finals by that margin – twice to Morningside and the third to Mt Gravatt.
The run began in 1991 when Morningside downed the Sharks by 18.24 (132) to 9.17 (71) in the big decider at the Gabba.
The Sharks also lost the 1993 grand final against Morningside by 8.9 (57) to 16.22 (118), again at the Gabba.
Then they lost to Mt Gravatt by 10.10 (70) to 20.11 (131) in the 2002 grand final played at Giffin Park, Coorparoo.
But the Sharks have also managed a grand final win by their bogy number.
That was when they beat Morningside by 16.15 (111) to 6.14 (50) at the Gabba in 2005.
- Southport have completed two unbeaten premierships in State League since 1983 and only one player appeared in both grand finals.
In 1990, the Gavan McGuane-coached Sharks went through an 18-match season without loss, culminating in a grand final victory against Morningside.
Jason Cotter was in that side, but he was non-playing coach when the Sharks matched that 1990 side’s effort with a run of 18 wins in 1999.
Craig Crowley, head coach of the Sharks from 2006 to 2010, played in the 1990 side as well.
So who is the only player to have appeared in both 1990 and 1999 grand finals?
It is none other than current Southport Sharks CEO Dean Bowtell, a member of the club’s ‘best of 25 years in state league’ side.
- Southport and Morningside are the only two clubs to have survived the test of time since the Sharks entered the QAFL in 1983.
Through eras of clubs folding and others merging, the Sharks and the Panthers have remained solid.
As such, an intense rivalry that developed right from the start has continued.
And the clubs share an unusual record in that from Round 17 of 1992 to Round 13 of 1996, neither club won two in a row against each other in 16 matches.
- During Southport’s glory year of 1990, when the club went through the season undefeated, the Sharks posted some huge scores.
It was perhaps the most dominant season in QAFL/QSFL/AFLQ history because statistically Southport’s numbers have ever been matched or beaten – and perhaps they never will be.
During the 18 matches they played, the Sharks broke the 200-points scored barrier five times, they broke the 150-point barrier six times and on the other seven times they scored more than 100 points.
Not once did that year’s rampaging Sharks score less than 100 points – a truly amazing effort under coach Gavan McGuane.
They conceded 100-plus points only twice and nine times restricted the opposition to less than 50 points.
For the record, in the 16 home-and-away matches, the Sharks scored 2806 points (average 175.3 per game) and finished with a percentage of 325.14.
In two finals matches, the Sharks scored 345 points and conceded 142 for a percentage of 242.95.
They beat Morningside by 30.19 (199) to 7.13 (55) in the major semi-final, then again beat the Panthers in the grand final by 22.14 (146) to 12.15 (87) to cap a year of absolute domination.
- The most losses in a season for Southport came in 2007, Craig Crowley’s second as coach, when they were beaten 10 times in 23 games (including the grand final against Mt Gravatt).
The second most losses in a season was in 1984, Norm Dare’s second in State League, when the Sharks lost nine of their 21 games.
